A British Open Kind of Day

Other than the Masters my second favorite golf tournament to watch on TV is the British Open.  It is commonly referred to as simply "The Open".  What makes this tournament so fun to watch is that the players are playing a tough course and at the same time they are frequently battling the elements.  It seems like every five or ten minutes it can go from sunny to raining to gusting winds to dark gray clouds and more.  Players will wear out umbrellas, rain gear and jackets pulling them out and then putting them away.  Today was that kind of day here in London.
The weather forecast was for rain in the morning with gusty winds and a chance of clearing in the afternoon.  Unfortunately the only part of the forecast that the weather guys missed was the clearing in the afternoon.  During the course of the day we did pull out the sunglasses occasionally but more frequently it was cloudy, rainy, windy and a bit on the chilly side.  No big deal, we carried on committed to our often used mantra of "don't judge the day by the weather".
We started at the British Museum which is huge and fabulous and made even better because it's free!  I think you could spend anywhere from an hour to a month checking out all the exhibits.  We didn't have a month to donate to enhancing our intelligence but we did have a few hours. We zeroed in on some of the Egyptian displays which we really enjoyed.  Lots of mummies, hieroglyphics and other cool stuff.
Surprisingly another interesting display was one on timekeeping through history.  Yeah, I know it doesn't sound like much but it was pretty cool learning how the early clocks were made and maintained.
There aren't a lot of plays in the West End on Sunday but we were able to pick up some seats for a comedy called "The Comedy About A Bank Robbery".  It was set in the US but contained a lot of British type slapstick humor.  Pretty funny stuff and definitely not a bad way to spend a chilly, rainy, windy afternoon in London.
It's getting close to 9:00 PM so of course we're back in the friendly confines of our hotel room.  We have the TV on the UK version of "The Voice".  Jennifer Hudson is one of the judges but there is this really old looking dude that is also a judge.  I just figured out it's Tom Jones!  Probably doesn't get quite as many panties, bras and hotel keys thrown on stage as he did 30-40 years ago!
The commercials on TV over here are a lot funnier and edgier than our commercials.  There was one on a few minutes ago for a product called VIPoo.  It's a spray you spray in the toilet before pooing that is supposed to trap those embarrassing odors.  Obviously this product is targeted to women because those odors are a source of great pride for men.  You gotta watch the commercial!

Strange that although we have four nights here in London today was our last full day.  Tomorrow we take the train to Paris.  We will return to London late tomorrow night and then catch another train to our next destination which is York on Tuesday morning.  Until we get to Edinburgh near the end of the month we'll be in smaller towns mostly along the coast probably getting our fill of fish and chips but still avoiding the baked beans for breakfast!
