The mushers and their dogs that filled downtown on Saturday morning are making their way towards Nome on the Iditarod Trail. They've been at it for over twenty-four hours. I just checked, and according to the latest report Ryan Redington of Knik, Alaska is currently in the lead. I'm no expert on the Iditarod, but I do know they've still got a lot of miles to cover, and I'm certain that a lot of things can change. Racing the Iditarod is in Ryan's DNA. His grandfather, father and uncle are all in the Mushing Hall of Fame. His grandfather is known as the "Father of the Iditarod" and is credited with organizing the event back in 1973.
We've enjoyed Talkeetna several times in the past. One of our more memorable experiences in Talkeetna was when we came close to getting hit by a small plane that was landing on what looked like a road but was actually a runway. If you have a chance to visit Talkeetna look out for low flying aircraft. That road you're walking down may actually be a runway!
Talkeetna is a few hours north of Anchorage, but the weather forecast is similar to what we've had here. High's both days we're in Talkeetna should be in the mid-30's with lows in the teens. There's a pretty good chance of more snow. From Talkeetna we'll then head further north to Fairbanks, where we'll have our best chance of seeing the Northern Lights. We've looked ahead to the weather forecast for Fairbanks.............Yikes!
