Adios Anchorage.............

This is Fourth Ave in downtown Anchorage at around noon on Monday.  It's a little quieter than it was on Saturday during the Iditarod Ceremonial Start and the Reindeer Run along this road.

Anchorage looks a bit different today than it did over the weekend.  The Fur Rondy Carnival that was across the street from our hotel is no more.  The Ferris Wheel, along with most of the other rides, attractions and food booths have been disassembled and moved.  When we walked around downtown today there were no reindeer or people galloping down 4th Avenue, as thousands cheered on both man and beast.

Fourth Avenue on Saturday Morning

The mushers and their dogs that filled downtown on Saturday morning are making their way towards Nome on the Iditarod Trail.  They've been at it for over twenty-four hours.  I just checked, and according to the latest report Ryan Redington of Knik, Alaska is currently in the lead.  I'm no expert on the Iditarod, but I do know they've still got a lot of miles to cover, and I'm certain that a lot of things can change.  Racing the Iditarod is in Ryan's DNA.  His grandfather, father and uncle are all in the Mushing Hall of Fame.  His grandfather is known as the "Father of the Iditarod" and is credited with organizing the event back in 1973.

Spectacular Monday Morning Sunrise.  The days are getting longer by six minutes per day.  Right now sunrise is around 7:40 and sunset is around 6:40.

The Christmas lights stay on in Town Square until the last musher finishes the Iditarod.

It was a great four days in Alaska's largest city (pop. 280,000), but it's time to move on.  This morning we'll take the Alaska Railroad Auroura Train to the small, eclectic village of Talkeetna (pop. 1,055), which is known as the Gateway to Denali National Park.  From 1997, until his death in 2017, Talkeetna had the same honorary mayor..........Stubbs the cat!

Stubbs The Cat

We've enjoyed Talkeetna several times in the past.  One of our more memorable experiences in Talkeetna was when we came close to getting hit by a small plane that was landing on what looked like a road but was actually a runway.  If you have a chance to visit Talkeetna look out for low flying aircraft.  That road you're walking down may actually be a runway!

Talkeetna

Talkeetna is a few hours north of Anchorage, but the weather forecast is similar to what we've had here.  High's both days we're in Talkeetna should be in the mid-30's with lows in the teens.  There's a pretty good chance of more snow.  From Talkeetna we'll then head further north to Fairbanks, where we'll have our best chance of seeing the Northern Lights.  We've looked ahead to the weather forecast for Fairbanks.............Yikes!

We're in Fairbanks from Thursday night until Wednesday afternoon!
