The last stop on our Southeast Asia journey will be Laos. Size wise Laos has a population of just under 7 million people. This makes it about half the size of Cambodia, which is about half the size of Vietnam. One unique thing about Laos is that it's the only country in Southeast Asia that is landlocked (a good trivia question).
The largest city and capital of Laos is Vientiane, which has a population of around 800,000. Like Vietnam and Cambodia, Laos has had a challenging past. However, also like those countries Laos appears to be moving forward with improvements in quality of life, as well as economic development indicators.
Tourism continues to grow and contribute significantly to the economy. Approximately one out of every ten jobs in Laos is connected in some way to tourism. Currently tourism contributes close to a billion dollars per year and is expected to continue to grow as the infrastructure develops.
We will be spending three nights in Luang Prabang, which has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It sits at the confluence of the Mekong and Khan Rivers and is famous for it's numerous Buddhist temples, waterfalls and night markets.
