A very Merry Christmas season.............Tucker style!

Merry Christmas!

A mere 161 miles from the scenic beauty, peace and tranquility of Zion National Park lies something completely different.  La$ Vega$.  A place where decadence and sin take center stage.  Where the mantra of "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" is the theme, and frequently applies to folks' hard-earned money being gladly taken in so many elegant casinos.

The Bellagio was decorated for the season.........

...........so was the Wynn

Although we're not real gamblers, we were excited to spend four nights in Las Vegas for several reasons.  There's plenty to see and do, from the various shows to great places to eat and of course the allure of striking it rich on just a small investment.  Additionally, there is plenty of entertainment to be had simply walking the Vegas strip or downtown Freemont Street area.  Back in the nineties there was an attempt to rebrand itself as "family friendly".  That idea didn't last long, and now it's a full tilt 24/7 playground for adults, and we know overserved and unsupervised adults can be quite entertaining.

But the real reason Beth and I were excited to get to Las Vegas was that it kicked off the start of our family Christmas celebration.  A celebration that would last for two weeks!

After checking into the hotel, we headed straight to the airport to pick up Ben.  He was able to work remotely, so he would be with us in Las Vegas and California when we expanded the celebration to include Sarah, Joey, James and Emma.  What a wonderful couple of weeks it turned out to be!

On the loose in downtown.  One of the best shows in Vegas is simply walking the Freemont Street Experience.  There's just no telling what you might see!

We played a little.  Can you tell who is up, who is down and who is even?

Lady luck giveth and lady luck taketh away!

While in Vegas we enjoyed seeing four different shows, all of which were very good.  First up was the very elaborate LOVE at the Mirage.  This is a Cirque de Soleil show set to music from the Beatles.  Beth and I liked this one the best.  We also enjoyed Mat Franco (magician who won America's Got Talent and Ben's favorite) at the Linq Hotel, Nathan Burton (Magician) at Planet Hollywood and Terry Fator (Ventriloquist and also an America's Got Talent winner) at New York, New York.

The Finale of LOVE.........we've seen a few of the Cirque du Soleil shows over the years.  This one was the best.

The Linq Promenade decorated for Christmas.  The High Roller Ferris Wheel is in the background.

Downtown Container Park.  There are numerous stores and a playground all made from old shipping containers.  In true Vegas fashion, the creature in the middle spits fire at night!

The Savannah Bananas are one of the hottest things in baseball these days.  They put on a great show (similar to the Harlem Globetrotters in basketball).  Ben's a huge fan of their team as well as the owner (Jesse Cole).  They were doing a promotional event in Las Vegas for their upcoming tour.  Ben is talking to "Stilts", the world's tallest baseball player.

Because he had the team on his facebook/instagram he was given two VIB (Very Important Banana) tickets to their May game in Las Vegas!

One of the other highlights of our time in Vegas was a trip to the boneyard.  The boneyard, also known as the Neon Museum, is super interesting and well worth a visit.  It's called the boneyard because that's a name given to old signs that are no longer being used.  Thankfully in Las Vegas many of these elaborate signs from various casinos, restaurants and other businesses have been preserved.  There are nightly docent led tours at the museum where the history of the city is told in signs from the past.  We really enjoyed the tour and give it three Tucker thumbs up.  If you're in Vegas, it's well worth visiting.

Ben can bring a smile to even someone as grumpy as the Grinch!

As fate would have it, while we were in Vegas the Florida Gators football team also happened to be there to play Oregon State in the Las Vegas Bowl.  It wasn't the best of years for my Gators.  As a matter of fact, it was pretty lousy.  We lost to all our big rivals (Georgia, Tennessee, LSU and FSU) and even committed the unforgivable sin of losing to Vanderbilt.  But, oh well!  They were there, we were there (Ben's a big Gator fan as well), so we went to the game.  We were joined by one of Ben's high school friends, and one of his buddies. Ben's friend, Daniel, is in the military and stationed at one of the bases just outside of Vegas.  The game was mostly a one-sided affair and unfortunately, we weren't on the good side.  We still had fun, enjoyed seeing Daniel again and also seeing the Las Vegas Raiders spiffy stadium.

Nice stadium on the outside.......

.........inside (way before the game started).................

..........just not the outcome we were hoping for........

We left Las Vegas on Sunday morning, just as the sun was rising and the last of the all-night partiers were making their way back to their hotels.   It was close to a 600 mile drive.  Thankfully it was uneventful, and an easy drive from Vegas to Sarah's house, just north of San Francisco.  It had been almost six months since we had seen our California family and we were super excited.

We arrived at their house and were there just long enough for some good hugs and stretching our legs before heading out for our first activity, the Pengrove Christmas Parade.  Pengrove is a small community of less than three thousand residents.  When it comes to Christmas parades, what they lack in size they more than make up for in spirit and enthusiasm.  The streets along the parade route were packed shoulder to shoulder and several people deep, waving and cheering as brightly decorated floats of all sizes and shapes passed by for well over an hour.  Most of the floats in the parade were tractors and trucks elaborately decorated with Christmas lights, Santa Clauses and even a few Grinches!

James and one of his friends waiting on the parade to start.

Once it started, it lasted more than an hour with all kinds of decorated cars

and floats!  Some of which had their own snow making machines!

After the parade we made our way to our rental home in Sonoma.  We feel so fortunate to have found this property a couple of years back.  It's a cozy and comfortable place that we enjoy so much that this is our third time here.

Since arriving, it's been mostly family time, which is really what it's all about.  We've loved keeping the kids as well as frequent get togethers with all the family.  On Christmas Day we enjoyed watching James and Emma marvel at all the presents under the tree, laughing while sharing great food and fellowship and simply being together.

The shirt says it all........FUNCLE!  James and Emma love their FUNcle Ben!

Emma is quite captivated by either Uncle Ben, the book or both!

We've loved keeping the kids several times.  There is a nice trail and playground close to our house that we really enjoy!

Dillionland is a walk-through Christmas light display that has been delighting Sonoma residents and visitors for decades.  We really enjoyed the Kissing Booth!

a video game machine with four different classic video games.............

lots and lots of smiles...........

and plenty of delicious food including smoked turkey and ham from MasterChef Joey!

Christmas day is now a few days in the rearview mirror.  We're going to be in California for several more weeks.  We'll be ringing in the New Year here, which is really nice for a number of reasons.  One of which is that we can watch the ball drop in NYC and head to bed shortly after 9:00.  We'll also be celebrating a young ladies third birthday on the 31st (as well as an old guy who's hitting Medicare age).

Ben had a flight scheduled for Wednesday (Dec. 28) on Southwest Airlines to go to Texas for a few days before heading back to Pennsylvania.  His flight was one of the thousands that was cancelled.  Fortunately thanks to Beth's great work, she was able to find him a seat on another airline (Alaska Air) so he left on Tuesday afternoon.

It's been a whirlwind of festive holiday fun, creating memories that will last a lifetime.  Hoping you had a very Merry Christmas and wishing you a Happy and Healthy 2023!

Utah's Big Five..........this time minus one!

Four of Utah's Big Five!

At the end of October, we left the Silver Bullet at the Montrose/Telluride Airport and flew back to Florida.  If you're a regular reader of this blog, thanks, and you know that this is something we do frequently.  The Montrose/Telluride airport has a great monthly rate that made it very easy and affordable.

On Wednesday, December 7 we flew back to Montrose/Telluride and found the Bullet right where we left it and ready to go.  We're now on our way to California to spend Christmas and kick in the New Year's with Sarah, Joey, James and Emma.  Me and my "birthday buddy, Emma will also be celebrating our birthdays on December 31.  Same day, but I've got her by a few years!  To make it even better Ben will be joining us for two weeks.  Having everyone together is the perfect Christmas present for Beth and I.

The Silver Bullet just needed a little snow dusted off the windshield and it was ready to go

It's a little over 1,000 miles from Montrose to Sonoma California, where our Airbnb is located.  We won't arrive there until December 18, meaning there's a lot of adventure to be had along the way.  First up was enjoying some time revisiting Utah's "Big Five" (sometimes referred to as the "Mighty Five") as they are affectionately known.  The Big Five are Arches, Canyonlands, Bryce Canyon, Zion and Capital Reef National Parks.

We've enjoyed visiting many of our 63 National Parks through the years.  This includes the First US National Park (Yellowstone), the most visited (Smokey Mountains), the largest (Wrangell-St. Elias in Alaska) and the only US National Park in the Southern Hemisphere (National Park of American Samoa) and a whole lot more.  They're all special and we'll keep working on checking more off the list as we wander about.  In February of 2018, we spent some time exploring all five of Utah's Big Five.  Earlier this year we spent several days at Zion.  This time through Utah we were only able to visit four of the Big Five..................Capital Reef, sorry we missed you, we'll try to swing by next time we're passing through.

I'm not going to spend a lot of time blogging about specifics of the parks.  If you're interested in reading more details, the links below will take you to some previous blogs.  This one will be mostly pictures from our time in the parks and along the way.  I will make a couple of recommendations on very scenic routes that we really enjoyed.   Between Grand Junction, Co. and Moab (gateway to Arches and Canyonland) Highway 128 runs along the Colorado River and is really interesting.  Our friend Wayne Sallade who lives in Grand Junction and who we visited with briefly when passing through recommended this route..........Thanks Wayne!  Between Moab and Bryce Canyon, Highways 72, 24 and 62 are great!  As is often the case, the journey is as good as the destination.  That's certainly the case with these two drives.

Parts of Highway 128 between Cisco and Moab are "open range".   Watch out for cattle while enjoying the view.

A few shots along the drive from Moab to Bryce Canyon.........

There were great overlooks.......

Interesting clouds that looked like a giant wave coming at us............

and a few icy patches!

Arches National Park-Moab is the gateway to both Arches and Canyonland National Parks.  We love visiting the parks in the "off season" when the crowds of summer are gone.  When we drove into Arches, we went the first eight and a half miles without seeing another car!  We estimated that we saw around two dozen different people on the more than six miles of trails that we covered that day.

Here are some shots from Arches:

The North (left) and South (right) Windows from the appropriately named Window Trail

Double Arches

Broken Arch

We're not real good with "selfies".  We're really not good trying to make a half a heart and take a picture at the same time.  I think it took us three tries!

Landscape Arch

Although Bryce National Park is more famous for it's Hoodoo's, there are plenty in Arches, too

Quite a balancing act!

Canyonlands National Park-It's an easy thirty-minute drive from Moab to the Island in the Sky entrance to Canyonlands National Park.  On clear days you can see mountains more than one hundred miles away from many of the overlooks in the Islands of the Sky section of this 337,000-acre park.

We had perfect blue skies in Canyonlands.  The Park Ranger told us that the mountains visible in this photo are close to forty miles away

The Green and Colorado Rivers run through the Islands in the Sky section of the park before merging near the southern end

Plenty of "Wide Open Spaces"

Great views all around in Canyonlands!

Bryce National Park-It's about a four-and-a-half-hour drive from Moab to Bryce National Park.  The first half of the drive is along I-70.  The second half is on very scenic small highways 72, 24 and 62.  This part of the drive is fantastic!

The fresh snow on the Hoodoo's made them even more spectacular

A nice view of the amphitheater from the Rim Trail

Natural Bridge

Inspiration Point.........we had it to ourselves for a few minutes!

Something we should have invested in many years ago!  These crampons are made by Yaktrax (Amazon).  They're very inexpensive and really improve your footing in icy conditions.

Zion National Park-This is our second visit to Zion this year.  We were here in February as well as back in 2018.  It's the second most visited of all our National Parks.  However, at this time of year it's pretty empty and you can actually drive through the park without having to take a shuttle.  During our five-night/four-day stay the highs were typically in the 30's and lows in the 20's.  It was mostly sunny the first two days.  We did have a couple of really nice snows that transformed the park into a winter wonderland for the last two days.

The Virgin River runs beside Zion Canyon Scenic Drive.  There's plenty of great trails and pull outs along the way

Near Sand Beach

We shared the Grotto Trail with around 10 Big Horn Sheep........

sometimes they only showed their arses!

On Saturday night Springdale hosted their annual Christmas parade.........

In addition to floats, decorated bikes, firetrucks and a marching band the town was lit up nicely!

Reindeer...........

Mule Deer!

Then it snowed..........

Which made our last two days in Zion even better!

Next up-This morning we leave Zion and head for a place that's a little different..........Las Vegas!  We'll be there for four days before moving on to California.  We're thrilled that Ben is meeting us in Las Vegas and we'll all be together for Christmas!
What happens in Vegas....................will be in the next blog!
